Don Quixote - Cervantes

I tried four times to read the Quixote.  This new translation by Edith Grossman must have made the difference.  I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud over words written four hundred years ago.  This is not a short book, but it is well worth the time and its reputation as one of the great works of western literature

Blindness - Jose Saramago

An epidemic of "white blindness" strikes a city. This is the story of the first victims placed in a mental hospital and gradually abandoned as the entire city succumbs. Through the loss and disorientation the worst and best emerge. There is one eyewitness to the nightmare who guides seven strangers through the devastated landscape. This book meant for the adult reader is fascinating to read even in translaltion. The author, Jose Saramago won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998
